Celebrity rivalries are as much a part of Hollywood as red carpets and the Oscars.
The late night feud between David Letterman and Jay Leno lasted for years. Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey got into it while on “American Idol.” Then, of course, there’s the long-lasting bad blood between Kim Kardashian West, Kanye West, and Taylor Swift.
Whether it’s backstabbing, man-stealing, or social-media hating, some of the scandals between these stars have been explosive and very public. Here’s a look at some of the celebrities scandals of all time.
1. Katy Perry vs Taylor Swift
Believe it or not, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift started off as best friends when they both came into the spotlight in the late 2000s. Fans thought their feud was sparked after Perry started dating Swift’s ex-boyfriend John Mayer in 2012. But they actually had a falling out over business.
“She basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour. She tried to hire a bunch of people out from under me. And I’m surprisingly non-confrontational — you would not believe how much I hate conflict. So now, I have to avoid her. It’s awkward, and I don’t like it.” Swift told Rolling Stone.
Swift got back at Perry by releasing the song “Bad Blood” in 2014 and the music video that followed in 2015, then, with her release of “Swish, Swish,” Perry’s song was seen as a diss track in reference to Swift.
2. Kevin Spacey sexual assault allegations.
Since October 2017, when BuzzFeed published allegations made by actor Anthony Rapp that Spacey made a sexual advance toward Rapp when Rapp was 14, more than 30 people have come forward with their own allegations against Spacey, ranging from harassment to attempted rape. On November 16, 2017, London’s Old Vic Theatre, where Spacey served as artistic director from 2004 to 2015, announced that a hotline set up to investigate Spacey had received 20 allegations of “a range of inappropriate behavior,” all concerning young men over the age of 18.
The allegations have brought about a flood of damage control as multiple Hollywood entities seek to distance themselves from the actor. Netflix, Spacey’s agent, his publicist, and the industry at large have all backed away from him — he’s been effectively fired from House of Cards and was completely recast in All the Money in the World, amid plenty of other fallout.
3. Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson’s engagement (and breakup)
Ariana and Pete were arguably the most talked about couple last year. Ari and Pete reportedly started dating in May, only a few weeks after both had broken up with their exes (Cazzie David and Mac Miller). Then, after only THREE WEEKS of dating, Pete proposed to the her. All summer long, the two shared an epic romance — they got matching tattoos, adopted a pig together, and even moved into a NYC apartment that cost $16 million. OK, casual.
But fans sensed there was trouble in paradise after Mac Miller tragically died of an apparent overdose on Sept. 8. Though Ari continued to publicly support Pete after the death, on Oct. 10, breakup rumors emerged when the SNL actor was seen with his Dangerous Woman tattoo covered up. And just three days later, on Oct. 14, the pair reportedly called it quits. A source told TMZ that Mac’s death may have led to the couple’s breakup.
4. Hailey Baldwin / Justin Bieber / Selena Gomez / The Weekend
Back in 2017, just when things seemed to be going well for The Weeknd and Selena Gomez, everything changed when she was seen hanging out with ex Justin Bieber again. Soon after, The Weeknd and Selena Gomez confirmed their split. Now it seems that The Weeknd is trying to get back with ex Bella Hadid. Neither of the couples have officially confirmed that they are back together.
In 2018, Jelena shippers were shook when the Biebs and Hailey Baldwin announced their engagement back in July, after only dating for about a month. And fans were shocked all over again when they visited a courthouse in NYC on Sept. 13.
Though the love birds seem super happy, Justin is apparently NOT over Selena. When Sel was hospitalized due to a mental breakdown in early October, Justin was seen crying in public, and reportedly felt “guilty… conflicted and confused.”
5. Paris Hilton vs. Nicole Richie
Childhood best friends Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie dominated reality TV when they both starred together on Fox’s “The Simple Life” in 2003. But at the height of their fame, the two were suddenly at war.
“It’s no big secret that Nicole and I are no longer friends,” Hilton said in a statement to press in April 2005. “Nicole knows what she did and that’s all I’m ever going to say about it.”
According to People magazine, Richie was jealous of the attention Hilton was getting from the media, angry that she wasn’t invited to some of Hilton’s events, and that she wasn’t included in Hilton’s appearance on NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in February 2005. So Richie reportedly had a party to celebrate Hilton’s appearance on the sketch show, followed by a screening of Hilton’s notorious 2003 sex tape.
“Paris was very hurt,” said People’s source. “;She loves Nicole, but believes she is owed an apology.”
Since then, the two made up and even filmed two more seasons of “The Simple Life.” Richie told Andy Cohen on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live” in 2014 that even though she and Hilton don’t talk every day, she considers her one of her very good friends.
“The short answer is I haven’t spoken to her in a while,” Richie said. “But we are very good friends and I love her and love her family and have a lot of respect for her.”
